In April 2009, only 22% of Americans over 50 used social networks. In one year the percentage has almost doubled to 42%. In the same period, use among those aged over 65 grew from 13% to 26%. This is what emerges from a survey by the prestigious PEW Internet which highlights a decisive change in communication habits, even if email still remains the main means of staying in touch via the internet. Even more interesting is that 20% of adults aged between 50 and 65 use social networks daily. While this percentage drops to 13% for those aged over 65. It seems to me to be an interesting trend, a harbinger of unprecedented impacts on society and which will probably not take long to manifest itself in Europe too.

PS David asked me to re-mix my social network map. Let's see if the project will come to fruition. For three days in Israel at the Coca-Cola Village Amusement Park the integration between the world made of atoms and the world made of bits was experimented.
Visitors, wearing a bracelet with an RFID chip personalized with their Facebook credentials, had the opportunity to express their appreciation of the various attractions by simply placing it next to a sensor sign. At the same time, in the world of bit, the action determined a login into the social network and the appearance of the 'like' in one's own mini feed and in the news feed of friends. Furthermore, each photograph taken by the playground photographer of the children with the bracelet produced an automatic tag. The idea, from the Publicis E-dologic agency, appears to have produced more than 35,000 status updates per day, a considerable number considering that the park could accommodate up to 650 people at a time. A great fun event, but also a precious source of information for the company.
