The Vetëvendosje movement, as a political movement, has represented the strong and constantly critical opposition to the government, reacting with street protests and tear gas in parliament. The name of the Movement is the same as the main slogan of the protests of 1968, which took place throughout Kosovo demanding the advancement of the national rights of the Albanians and the strengthening of their political status as an entity within the then Yugoslavia. These protests took place with the slogan Vetevendosje. In 2004, Albin Kurti founded the Vetëvendosje Movement, which had as one of its main points the holding of a referendum on union with Albania.
